Trick

Jennifer stormed into my office, her nostrils flaring and her eyes shooting daggers. She reached my desk and slammed a sheaf of papers down onto it. “Do you care to explain this?”

“I’m going to have to call you back,” I said into the receiver and then hung up the phone. I rolled my chair back and steepled my fingers over my abdomen. “Is something the matter, Ms. Davis?”

“Fuck you, Trick. You know exactly why I’m here.” She slapped her palms down onto the wood and leaned forward, giving me a direct view down her dress.

I let my gaze linger there for a moment longer than was appropriate, recalling how sensitive her nipples had been when I’d clamped my teeth around them in the shower this morning, and then raised my eyes back up.

I inclined my head toward the documents she’d practically thrown at me. “I take it you read the report.”

“I did. And even with my higher than average reading comprehension skills, I cannot find one logical reason why I have to cut half the employees in my department. We’re the only ones in this company bringing in more than we spend.”

“Be that as it may, we still have too many employees. I can’t believe this comes as a surprise to you.”

Her jaw clenched, and she growled in frustration and looked away.

It was at that moment that I realized she was, in fact, surprised.

Jennifer was a smart woman—probably the smartest one at the company. Surely she didn’t really believe the marketing department would walk away from a company-wide re-org unscathed? At the end of the day, they didn’t actually produce anything. We needed to invest our money in products so that our sales department could turn around and sell to customers. We needed to turn this sinking ship around fast.

“Jennifer …” I sighed and pushed to my feet. I buttoned my coat and stepped around my desk. When I reached her, I settled my hands on her shoulders. “This isn’t personal.”

It couldn’t be. The ramifications were too great.

There was no earthly way I was going to go easy on her team just because she and I were fucking. I’d already stepped so far over the line of what was acceptable behavior for a boss and his employee, but I still had some scruples. If our relationship ever got out, at least I could honestly say that I’d never given her preferential treatment in exchange for sex.

But from the angry slit of her eyes to how her cheeks had turned a dark, blotchy red, I could tell she thought it was personal.

“It’s just business,” I continued, crouching low so that we were eye to eye. “You’d do the same if you were in my position.”

She lifted her chin high and huffed. “Actually, I wouldn’t. If I were in charge, I would have started by firing Jeremy Summers. He’s a pompous idiot who hires even bigger idiots who keep missing their numbers. Inbound leads driven directly by my department’s campaigns, followed by
